Introduzzjoni

Merħba sinjuri! Nilqagħkom għal dan l-ewwel kunċert tiegħi, Vanessa Vassallo Mezzo Sopran. Takkumpanjana għal din is-serata għandi il-pjanista Natalia Rakhmatulina. Illum ser insemmgħulkom mużika klassika barokka u kantata.

Qabel nibdew nixtieq niddedika din is-serje ta’ kunċerti lill-familti li minn ċkuniti għarfu l-imħabba li għandi lejn il-mużika u lil żewġi li jkun l-ewwel wieħed li jinkuraġġini biex nagħmel passi kbar bħal dawn tal-lum.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to my very first concert. I, Mezzo Soparon Vanessa Vassallo, shall be your host for this evening of classic baroque music. We shall be accompanied by Natalia Rakhmatulina, our pianist.

May I dedicate this series of concerts to my family who never held back my passion for music and my husband who is my prime source of encouragement.

1. Per La Gloria D'Adorarvi

L-ewwel aria, Per La Gloria D’Adorarvi, miktuba minn Giovanni Bononcini fl-1701 tifforma parti mill-opera Griselda. Hi titratta t-tema' tal-imħabba bejn ir-Re Gualtiero u r-Reġina ta' oriġini fqira Griselda.

The first aria is penned by Giovanni Bononcini in the year 1701 and taken from his opera Griselda. Per La Gloria D’Adorarvi meaning For My Love My Heary Doth Prize;  it revolves around the theme of love between King Gualterio and Queen Griselda who was from humble origins.

2. Amarilli, Mia Bella

It-tieni aria ippreparata għal din is-serata hija Amarilli, Mia Bella. Oriġinarjament din kienet poeżija melodika miktuba minn Alessandro Guarini li tlaħħmet bil-mużika fis-sena 1602 minn Giulio Caccini. Hi titratta id-dubju tal-imħabba lejn Amarilli mill-maħbub tagħha kantata mill-perspettiva tiegħu.

The second aria for this musical evening is Amaryllis, My Beloved. Originally a lyrical poem written by Alessandro Guarini, it received a beautiful gown of melody in 1602 by Giulio Caccini. It is an assurance of love from her beloved after the seed of doubt is planted in Amaryllis.

3. Vergin Tutto Amor

After these two whispers of love, let us indulge in prayers. We seek for the Virgin Mary to hear our pleas of sadness and sorrow through Vergin Tutto Amor by Francesco Durante. A religious masterpiece from the eighteenth century.

4. Alma Del Core

Mill-isem tagħha stess, din l-aria turina li hija mill-ġdid dwar l-imħabba. Alma Del Core, meħuda mill-opera La Constanza In Amor Vince L'Inganno ta' Antonio Caldara miktuba fl-1710. Il-lirika hija konfessjoni ta' mħabba bix-xewqa li xi darba isseħħ il-bewsa fuq xofftejn is-sors ta' tant ispirazzjoni.

The title itself betrays the theme, Alma Del Core, Soul of My Heart. This aria, taken from Antonio Calarda's opera La Constanza In Amor Vince l'Inganno of 1710, is a confession of undying love that may relieve torment if only by a simple kiss.

5. Nina

Nina ta' Vincenso Ciampi hija aria oħra still barokk tas-seklu tmintax. Din titratta il-lament ta' raġel li għandu lill-maħbuba tiegħu marida serjament li ilha fis-sodda tipprova tirkupra saħħitha għal tlett ijiem sħaħ.

Nina is an aria from the eighteenth century by Vincenso Ciampi. It revolves around the intense anguish of a helpless man over his beloved Nina who has been ill in bed for three long days.

6. Vittoria, Mio Core!

Imiss issa kompożizzjoni klassika u barokka ta' Giacomo Carissimi, li inkitbet fis-seklu sbatax u jisimha Vittoria, mio core! li tfisser Vittorja, Qalb Tiegħi! Din titratti l-imħabba mil-lat meta il-firda isserraħ il-qalb fejn biż-żmien kull weġa' tisfaxxa fix-xejn.

Next is a classical and baroque music piece from Giacomo Carissimi composed in the seventeenth century and named Vittoria, mio core! meaning Victorious my heart is! While thematic on love, it treats heartbreak as a grateful act where emotional pains may heal in time.

7. Caro Mio Ben

Kompożizzjoni kbira oħra hija ta Giordani li jisimha Caro Mio Ben. Mill-ġdid ser nisimgħu maħbub li qed iżewwaq l-isbaħ kliem sabiex jikkonvinċi lill-maħbuba tiegħu li qalbu, mingħarjha mhi xejn.

A great musical composition by Giordani, Caro Mio Ben, is the next interpretation. It means O Maiden Dear and the subject is yet again love from the perspective of a man who is trying his best to convince his lover that his heart has nowhere to go except beside hers.

8. Pur Dicesti, O Bocca Bella

U donnu Giordani u terġa' aktar qabel Antonio Caldara irnexxielhom jikkonvinċuha għax b'Pur Dicesti, O Bocca Bella ta' Antonio Lotti ser naraw kif il-protagonist fl-aħħar jirċievi l-bewsa mimlija mħabba li tant tħabat għaliha.

This classic piece accomplishes the hard work of Giordani and Calarda in their quest to have our lover receive that ever out-of-reach kiss. In the end, Antonio Lotti succeeds for by the heart melting Pur Dicesti, O Bocca Bella, the prized kiss is finally earned to the euphoria of our protagonist.

9. Ave Maria

Din is-serata nixtieq nagħlaqha

bl-interpretazzjoni tiegħi tal-Ave Maria ta' Giulio Caccini.

Kont bdejt nitgħallimha mal-kor Flower of Carmel

fil-parroċċa tal-Fgura

immexxi minn Lilian Plumpton

u meta bdejt inkattar iktar il-vuċi

kont studjajtha għand Lino Attard

li forsi tafuh bħala

Chairman tal-Orkestra Nazzjonali

u f'daż-żminijiet anke taħt id-direzzjoni ta'

Dr. Joseph Lia li inzerta ir-raġel ta' Natalia

l-pjanista tagħna llejla.

U b'hekk inħoss li huwa xieraq li f'dan il-kunċert

inkanta din il-mużika klassika li tant għandi għal qalbi.

I would like to end this evening by my interpretation

of Caccini's Ave Maria.

This religious song was one of the first I learnt at

the Fgura Parish's Choir of Carmel

under the tuition of Lilian Plumpton.

Then I furthered its study with Lino Attard

whom you may know as a Chairman of the National Orchestra.

And eventually, I refined it under the direction

of Dr. Joseph Lia who also happens to be

the husband of Natialia, my pianist for this concert.

Without further ado, may I thank you

for spending this evening in our company,

here is my interpretation of Ave Maria.

Tmiem

Grazzi li qattajtu is-serata miegħna. Il-lejl it-tajjeb!
